  • Description

DURING HIS TWO WEEKS' STAY IN CONGO-KINSHASA (ENDING TOMORROW, 1 MARCH) AT THE HEAD OF A BELGIAN ECONOMIC MISSION, PRINCE ALBERT OF LIEGE, BOTHER OF BELGIUM'S KING BAUDOUIN, HAS BEEN FULFILLING VARIOUS OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENTS.

AMONG THEM WAS THE OPENING OF A SCHOLL FOR BELGIAN CHILDREN IN KINSHASA; A GALA RECEPTION GIVEN THE MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS; AND VISIT TO THE INGA HYDRO-ELECTRIC PROJECT AND THE LIMETE HOUSING SITE.

IN KINSHASA, PRINCE ALBERT CEMENTED THE FOUNDATION STONE OF A NEW SCHOOL INTENDED FOR THE CHILDREN OF BELGIANS ENGAGED IN AIDING CONGO-KINSHASA'S DEVELOPMENT; HE WAS WARMLY APPLAUDED BY THE FUTURE SCHOLARS.

AT THE GALA RECEPTION GIVEN IN HIS HONOUR, THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, JUSTIN MARIE BOMBOKO, DECLARED: "YOU CAN BE THE MAINSPRING OF BELGIAN-CONGOLESE CO-OPERATION", -- A REMARK WHICH WAS WARMLY RECIPROCATED BY THE BELGIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN TRADE, M. HENRI FAYAT. THE PRINCE WAS OFFERED A MAGNIFICENT VIEW FROM AN AIR CONGO AIRCRAFT OF THE HUGE HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER PROJECT NOW BEING BUILT AT IMGA, 300 KM (NEARLY 200 MILES) FROM KINSHASA, WHERE THE PREPARATORY WORK ON THE FIRST STAGE, WHICH IS TO PRODUCE 3 1/2 MILLION KWH, HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND WHERE IT IS INTENDED TO GENERATE AS MUCH ELECTRICITY AS IN THE SIX EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES TAKEN TOGETHER. AT LIMETE -- WHERE THE PRINCE, HIS PARTY AND MINSTER LOAREGO WERE RECEIVED BY MME LIAHU-KANZA, MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS - AN OFFICIAL HOUSING PROJECT COMPRISING 2,300 HOUSES IS IN PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTION. THESE HOUSES ARE TO ACCOMMODATE, AT FIRST, THE VISITORS TO A PROJECTED WORLD FAIR, AND WILL THEN BE PUT UP FOR SALE.

THE BELGIAN ECONOMIC MISSION'S VISIT, WHICH PROVIDED THE FIRST OCCASION FOR A MEMBER OF THE BELGIAN ROYAL FAMILY TO VISIT THE CONGO SINCE IT ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE IN 1960, WAS BEEN IN KINSHASA AS A MILESTONE IN THE RAPID IMPROVEMENT OF RELATIONS BETWEEN BRUSSELS AND KINSHASA. IT CAME ABOUT AT THE INVITATION OF PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU, PRESIDENT OF CONGO-KINSHASA.
