Background: Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia has been visiting the west African nation of Niger on a fact-finding mission for UNICEF. His visit was part of a tour of several countries gathering information on existing and potential UNICEF projects. Prince Talal has been an honourary special envoy to UNICEF since April 1980, and he is also president of the Arab Gulf Programme for the United Nations Development Organization (AGFUND). At the end of his tour, he will make the customary verbal report to AGFUND. Among those who greeted him at Niamey on Monday (5 April) were Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Niger and the country's chief of protocol. Because of his work in many parts of the world for children and deprived people, Prince Talil, a brother of King Khalid, has been described as 'The Prince of the Poor'.
