Background: At the end of his eight-day visit to Iraq, Russian First Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan Left Baghdad for Moscow, Apr 16. He was seen of at the airport by General Kassem and his Ministers, by high-ranking Iraqi officers and members of the Diplomatic Corps, including Soviet Ambassador Gregori Zeitsev.

Mikoyan came to Baghdad to open the first Soviet industrial exhibition in the country, and to discuss friendly relations and economic ties with Premier Kassem. He was accorded the usual official courtesies, but his visit lacked highlights and no joint communique was issued after his talks with the Iraqi leader.

If Mr Mikoyan's visit was intended - as observers believe - to strengthen Russia's foothold in Iraq, there is no indication that the Deputy Premier's visit has been much of a success. Since dismissing the most prominent of his Left-wing Ministers, General Kassem has shown little sympathy for the Communist faction in his country. And although Mr. Mikoyan stressed at a Press conference before his departure that there was "no desire by Iraq or Russia involving some GBP45 million - there was no official message of gratitude for his to take back to the Kremlin.
