Background: The Pow's were captured when they were on a reconnaissance job at 0315 hours in a night ambush set by the Khmer. Identity cards, they carried (and questioning) disclosed they were from the NVA 330 Division (D3 battalion).

One of those captured was a lieutenant, the other a private. They were questioned personally at Neak Luong (pron. neek loong) - Mekong River ferry crossing town - by commanding-general of the embattled Svey Rieng (inc. Parrot's Beak) area - Frig/Gen.Srey Meas. Srey Meas speaks Vietnamese. Lieutenants name was Nguyen Van Cho.

Pow's said they thought the intention was to capture the vital town of Neak Luong - thus out off Phnom-Penh completely by land and water. Meanwhile, the Khmer frontline position is only 6 miles away down Highway 1 - and facing the NVA position less than 1k.m. away. The Khmers were form a famed "devil-may-cars" battalion - the 29th Commandos (23rd Infantry Brigade) -led by a young vietnam, Major Chroueng Dary. His troops (and he least of all) didn't appear worried that they when facing an estimated 4 NVA battalions, and that they stood between the NVA and their objective.
