    Background: TWENTY THREE STUDENTS OF WASEDA UNIVERSITY IN JAPAN WERE INJURED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN A FIERCE CLASH OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY BUILDING. SOME STUDENTS THERE HAVE BEEN BOYCOTTING GRADUATION EXAMINATIONS IN PROTEST AT A DECISION BY THE UNIVERSITY BOARD TO RAISE TUITION FEES. FIGHTING BROKE OUT WHEN A CROWD OF STUDENTS NOT TAKING PART IN THE BOYCOTT TRIED TO BREAK THOUGH A LINE OF STUDENTS PICKETING THE ENTRANCE TO THE EXAM ROOM.

    THE ANTI-STRIKE STUDENTS TRIED TO TEAR AWAY THE BARRICADED WHICH WERE BLOCKING THE ENTRANCES TO THE EXAMINATION ROOMS. AS THEY DID, TEMPERS BECAME FRAYED AND SOME PICKED UP PIECES OF WOOD FROM THE BARRICADING AND JOINED IN THE FIGHTING WITH IT.

    THE DISPUTE HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY WHEN UNIVERSITY AUTHORITIES ANNOUNCED THAT THE ANNUAL RATE OF TUITION FOR LIBERAL ARTS STUDENTS WAS BEING INCREASED FROM 50,000 TO 80,000 YEN AND FOR SCIENCE STUDENTS FROM 80,000 TO 120,000 YEN. THESE RATES WOULD BECOME EFFECTIVE FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT TUITION YEAR BEGINNING ON APRIL 1. THE DEAN OF THE UNIVERSITY, DE COROHAMA, HAS SAID THAT THE RISE IN FEES WAS NECESSARY SO THAT THE HIGH STANDARD OF TEACHING AT THE UNIVERSITY COULD BE MAINTAINED .

    WASEDA UNIVERSITIES IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN JAPAN.
