    THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON APARTHEID OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY HAS APPROVED ITS FINAL REPORT WHICH RECOMMENDS THAT THE SECURITY COUNCIL "DEMAND" THAT SOUTH AFRICA HALT THE CURRENT SERIES OF TRIALS OF ANTI-APARTHEID LEADERS. THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT WAS ALSO TO REFRAIN FROM EXECUTING THOSE LEADERS ALREADY FOUND GUILTY AND SENTENCED TO DEATH.

    THE REPORT APPROVED AN APPEAL TO "ORGANIZATIONS AND EMINENT PERSONALITIES" THAT THEY USE THEIR INFLUENCE TOWARDS THE SAME ENDS. THE TEXT OF A LETTER FROM THE ORGANIZATION OF PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES (OBEC) ASKING ITS MEMBERS TO OBSERVE AND SET UP AN EMBARGO AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA WAS ALSO PASSED BY THE COMMITTEE.
