Background: ABOUT 800 SHIPYARD WORKERS IN PORT DE BOUC, ON THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST OF FRANCE, TODAY (THURSDAY) BLOCKED THE REMOVAL OF A HALF-FINISHED SHIP, AND IN RESPONSE, THE MANAGEMENT OF THE DOCKYARD ORDERED A LOCKOUT.

THIS ACTION IS THE LATEST MOVE IN A LONG-STANDING DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN MANAGEMENT AND LABOUR AT THE SHIPYARD. TENSION IS SAID TO BE RUNNING HIGH - AND RIOT POLICE ARE STANDING BY AT THE APPROACHES TO THE TOWN. THE SHIPYARD - UPON WHICH THE TOWN DEPENDS - HAS BEEN THREATENED FOR WEEKS WITH BANKRUPTCY AND CLOSURE.

THE MANAGEMENT WANTS A CAR FERRY - THE "PROVENCE" - WHICH WAS BEING BUILT AT PORT DE BOUC, TO BE TAKEN TO NEARBY CIOTAT SHIPYARDS. THEY CLAIM THAT THE MORE REPID COMPLETION OF THE VESSEL WOULD RELEASE FUNDS URGENTLY NEEDED TO STAVE OFF IMMINENT BANKRUPTCY.

SHIPYARDS WORKERS AT CIOTAT ARE STRIKING IN SYMPATHY WITH THEIR PORT DE BOUC COLLEAGUES.
