  • Description

The Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Raman, yesterday (Monday) was given a full demonstration of the attack capability of the British assault ship, HMS Fearless.

The Tunku and a party of Malaysian service officers were taken by helicopter to the ship which was operating in cooperation with the anti-submarine frigate HMS Rothesay in the Malacca Straits off Port Swettenham.

They watched a demonstration of launching assault landing craft at sea, rocket firing by helicopters, anti-submarine mortar firing and rescue operations.

On arrival on the Fearless, Tunku Abdul Rahman was welcomed by the second in command of the Far East Fleet, Rear Admiral Terence Lewin.

Rear Admiral Lewin told newsmen aboard the ship that because it was phasing out aircraft carriers, the Royal Navy would have to give up some of its commitments in the area. He said this had been accepted by the present Britain Government.

However, he said the Royal Navy would retain its ability to reinforce any area quickly.

HMS, Fearless, according to the Royal Navy, pioneered a new era in British amphibious capability. The assault ship is virtually streamlined floating deck. The deck is flooded, sinking the ship far enough to enable leading craft to most out astern. Navy and Royal Air Force helicopters operate from the flight deck.

Fearless can land infantry troops or commandos and all their equipment or a complete unit of engineers with their heavy equipment.

HMS Fearless was the meeting place in 1968 for talks between the British Prime Minster, Mr. Wislon, and the Rhodesian leader, Mr. Ian Smith.
