  • Description

THE SARAWAK FIELD FORCE, AN ORGANISATION DEALING WITH INTERNAL SECURITY DUTIES, IS ATTRACTING NEW MEMBERS FROM DIFFERENT RACES. WHEN IT WAS FIRST FORMED IN 1932 IT WAS DOMINATED BY IBANS, A GROUP OF TRIBES FROM SOUTHWEST BORNEO. IBANS STILL FORM THE BACKBONE OF THE FORCE BUT THEY HAVE BEEN JOINED BY LARGE NUMBERS FROM OTHER BORNEO TRIBES SUCH AS THE KELABITS, KENYAHS, MALAYS AND MURUTS.

THE MIRI DETACHMENT OF THE SARAWAK FIELD FORCE IS COMMANDED BY DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT I.A. EDGERLEY WHO SPARES NO PRAISE ON HIS NEW RECRUITS. "THEY ARE TOUGH AND KEEN TO LEARN" HE SAYS.

THERE IS GREAT ADVANTAGE IN HAVING SUCH A MULTI-RACIAL GROUP IN DIFFICULT BORDER AREAS LIKE THOSE OF INLAND SARAWAK. THERE ARE FEW TRIBES NOT REPRESENTED IN THE FORCE, AND THIS MAKES COMMUNICATION WITH THE LOCAL PEOPLE EASY.

THE SARAWAK FIELD FORCE PLAYED A BIG PART LAST YEAR IN QUELLING THE RIOTS THAT ACCOMPANIED THE VISIT TO THIS AREA OF THE UNITED NATIONS FACT FINDING MISSION.
