An agreement signed in Brazzaville on Tuesday (1 July) will bring the benefits of ultra-modern telecommunications technology to the People's Republic of the Congo within two years.

The treaty -- between the Congolese Government and France -- provides for the constructing of a satellite ground-station in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville.

Construction work is due to begin in September and it is estimated that the ground-station will be functioning by early 1977. France is Providing the major part of the money to finance the new project, which will extend the telecommunications systems already in operation in the People's Republic.

Congolese Defence Minister in charge of Posts and Telecommunications, Colonel Yhombi Opango -- representing the Congolese Government at the signing ceremony -- announced that France had also agreed to cover the cost of training Congolese technicians to run and maintain the satellite station.
