    Dublin-born John Francis Norton, Bishop of Bathurst, New South Wales, became the 45th Freeman of the City of Dublin October 28.

    Among those at the ceremony held in the Oak Room of the Mansion House were Prime Minister Eamonn de Valera, and Ambassadors of Holland, France, and the Swedish Minister.

    Church dignitaries were led by the Archbishop of Dublin John C. McQuaid. The City Fathers and Corporation were led by the Lord Mayor who presented the scroll of Freedom after the Bishop signed the City's Roll of Honour.

    Among the Australians present were Charge d'Affaires Noel St. Clair Deschamps, the Reverends Noel Grant, L. Grant, J. Haselor, J. McGuinn.

    In his address the Bishop express his gratitude for the honour Dublin had bestowed on him, recalled he was with one advantage over other Freemen - "I am a Dublin man born."
    He said Bathurst had many ties with Dublin - it was founded by a Dublin priest, Dr. Matthew Quinn. His successor was a Dublinman, Bishop Byrne. The third and fourth Bishops, Dr. Dunne and Dr. O'Farrell were educated in Dublin.

    "These and many other diocesan with our dear City were greatly strengthened by His Grace the Archbishop who during his history-making tour of Australian honoured Bathurst with a visit, where he laid the foundation stone of a War Memorial Chapel. There and elsewhere he stirred the hearts and lifted up the hands of us Irishman."
