  • Description

THE SYRIAN ARMY -- TODAY NUMBERING 45,000 TRAINED MEN -- IS BEING BOLSTERED BY RECRUITS VOLUNTEERING FOR THE PEOPLE'S ARMY -- MOBILIZED TO DEFEND THE COUNTRY AGAINST "ZIONIST, IMPERIALIST OR REACTIONARY AGGRESSION". THIS IS EXCLUSIVE FILM OF THE RARELY PHOTOGRAPHED SYRIAN ARMY, IN TRAINING.

THE SYRIAN ARMY, WHICH ALSO INCLUDES A BEDOUIN CONTROL FORCE OF 1,000 MEN, NOW GETS MOST OF ITS EQUIPMENT AND TECHNICAL ADVISERS FROM THE SOVIET UNION, INCLUDING NEARLY 200 T-44 TANKS.

THE PEOPLE'S ARMY BEGAN IN MID-OCTOBER WHEN SYRIA OPENED 20 RECRUITING CENTRES AT POLICE STATIONS, FACTORIES AND THE HOMES OF "MOKHTARS", OR VILLAGE CHIEFS. BY EARLY NOVEMBER, SYRIA SAID 150,000 PEOPLE HAD VOLUNTEERED FOR THE POPULAR ARMY AND THERE WERE 500 RECRUITING CENTRES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

AT THE SAME TIME, A DEFENCE PACT WAS SIGNED IN CAIRO, COMMITTING EGYPT TO GIVE "ALL-OUT" MILITARY AID TO SYRIA IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK BY ISRAEL. THE PACT SAYS THAT AN ATTACK ON ONE COUNTRY WILL BE REGARDED AS AN ATTACK ON THE OTHER TO BE REPELLED BY THE ARMED FORCES OF BOTH COUNTRIES.

PERMISSION FOR VISNEWS TO TAKE THIS EXCLUSIVE FILM OF THE SYRIAN ARMY IN TRAINING EXERCISES "SOMEWHERE IN SYRIA" WAS GIVEN BY THE ARMY'S CHIEF OF STAFF, MAJOR GENERAL AHMED SWEIDANI.
