  • Description

Archbishop Makarios told a cheering crowd of Greek-Cypriots in Paphos on Sunday (13 May), that he would continue his campaign to purify the Cyprus Orthodox Church.

He had just celebrated mass in a crowded Church of St. Theodore in Paphos, West Cyprus, where he'd ordered the election of a new bishop to replace Bishop Yennadios, the 83-year-old man who'd led moves to strip the Archbishop of his ecclesiastical titles unless he gave up his presidency.

Bishop Yennadios was driven out of Paphos in March 1972, when local citizens learned of his efforts. He hasn't been back.

But is was a happier story for the Archbishop. He was given a hero's welcome, and, after the service, local citizens crowded around him to touch him. At a brief speech after the service, he told the crowd that they would soon have a new Bishop.
