  • Description

John MacDonald of Hong Kong won the 20th Macau Grand Prix for the second successive time on Sunday (November 18th).

Nineteen cars, one of the best fields ever to enter the race, competed for the first prize of 6,000 U.S. dollars (2,400 sterling). The 40-lap event was raced over the twisting Macau Guia circuit.

John MacDonald driving a Brabham BT40, took the lead soon after the race began, and held it for the entire 152 miles race. MacDonald, in car number 11, won the Grand Prix in one hour and 45 minutes.

Sonny Rajah of singapore, driving a March 712, hung on behind MacDonald to take second place, while New Zealand's Graeme Lawrence, during a Surtees TS 10 came in third.

The race was virtually trouble-free. But earlier in the day, during the Motorcycle Grand Prix, a Hong Kong driver was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a retaining wall. It was the fourth fatal accident in 20 years at the Macau circuit.

For John MacDonald, his second successive win at Macau capped a successful year of racing on the Asian circuit. Since his victory at Macau last November, he has won grand prix events in Manila, Malaysia, Penang, and the Philippines.
