    Prince Norodom Sihanouk, the exiled former Khmer leader, arrived in Mauritania on Friday (July 7) for a seven-day official visit. Accompanied by his wife Princess Monique, the Prince was welcomed at the airport by President Moktar Ould Daddah and Mauritanian government leaders.

    In his speech of welcome, the Mauritanian head of state referred to the "felonious clique" that had "usurped" power in the Khmer Republic. He pledged the support of the Mauritanian people to the struggle of the Khmer people to recover their independence.

    During the visit, the Prince and his wife will tour a number of Mauritanian provincial centres.

    SYNOPSIS: Prince Norodom Sihanouk, the exiled Khmer leader, flew to Mauritania at the weekend to start a week-long official visit.

    Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah, his wife and government leaders were at the airport to welcome their guest. Prince Sihanouk and his wife Princess Monique had just completed a visit to Algeria, where they had joined in celebrations of the country's tenth independence anniversary.

    At Nouakchott the formalities of welcome included a speech by the mauritanian head of state, in which he affirmed his country's continuing support for Prince Sihanouk. President Ould Daddah spoke of the sacred struggle of the Khmer people to recover their independence and dignity. He condemned what he called the "felonious clique" which had usurped power -- partly in the name of imperialism.

    The President introduced Princess Monique to Mauritanian leaders. prince Sihanouk was to thank his hosts for a magnificent welcome and he praised the policies of the president and his government. During their seven-days in Mauritania, the prince and Princess will be visiting a number of provincial centres.
