    Background: IT WAS VOTING DAY IN MALAGASY YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN THE REPUBLIC'S SECOND POST-INDEPENDENCE LEGISLATIVE ELECTION. THE LAST NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF 107 MEMBERS ENDED ITS TERM IN JUNE. MEMBERS ARE ELECTED BY UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE AND SERVE A TERM OF FIVE YEARS.

    PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA AND HIS WIFE WERE EARLY ARRIVALS AT A POLLING STATION IN TANANARIVE. OVER 2 1/2 MILLION PEOPLE ARE ON THE ELECTORS' LIST. THE NUMBER OF SEATS IN THE ASSEMBLY FOR THIS TERM REMAINS UNCHANGED, AT 107.

    THE MAIN CONTENDING PARTIES IN THE ELECTIONS ARE THE GOVERNMENT SOCIAL DEMOCRATS (PSD); AND TWO INDEPENDENT GROUP (AKFM AND MONIMA).

    WITH FRANCE, MALAGASY -- FORMERLY MADAGASCAR -- IS ONE OF SEVEN REPUBLICS IN THE FRENCH COMMUNITY.
