    IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) SIXTEEN SOLDIERS CONVICTED OF MUTINY LAST JANUARY WERE SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR TERMS RANGING FROM FIVE TO FOURTEEN YEARS. ALL SIXTEEN HAD BEEN LIABLE TO THE DEATH PENALTY.

    THE COURT WAS COMPOSED OF AFRICAN OFFICERS OF THE KENYA RIFLES, UNITS OF WHICH WERE INVOLVED IN THE MUTINY AT LANET, 100 MILES FROM NAIROBI. ALL THE SOLDIERS PLEADED "NOT GUILTY" TO MUTINY WITH VIOLENCE.

    IN HIS SUMMING UP, JUDGE - ADVOCATE H.G. SHERRIN RECALLED THAT ONE AFRICAN SOLDIER WAS KILLED WHEN BRITISH TROOPS WERE CALLED IN TO PREVENT MUTINEERS BREAKING INTO AN ARMS' STORE.

    NINETEEN SOLDIERS ARE ON TRIAL IN TANGANYIKA AND EIGHT IN UGANDA, ALSO CHARGED WITH TAKING PART IN MUTINIES LAST JANUARY.
