Strikes and demonstrations continue in Bangkok despite government warnings that Thailand faces economic anarchy. Latest to walk out were employees Metropolitan Electricity Board who threatened the capital with a total blackout. Some 9,000 workers gathered outside the Board's headquarters to press for better pay and ???orking conditions. Strikes are still technically illegal in Thailand. Under successive military governments union activities were strictly curbed. Since the overthrow by students in October of the regime headed by Karshal Kittikachorn there has been an upsurge of industrial unrest. Everybody form bus drivers to school teachers has been demanding more pay - and getting it.
On this occasion a power crisis was averted when the Metropolitan Electricity Board gave in to the workers demand. The strike was called off and power supplies throughout the Thai capital are now reported to be functioning normally.
