  • Description

Algeria President Houari Boumedienne marked his seventh anniversary in power on Monday (June 19) by laying the foundation-stone of a power-station and by opening the county's second natural gas liquefaction plant.

He chose the fast-growing industrial centre of Skikda in Eastern Algeria as the centre of the celebrations of the coup d'etat which ousted President Ahmed Ben Bella in 1965.

SYNOPSIS: President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria on Monday arrived at the Eastern Algerian industrial centre of Skikda to celebrate his seven years as head of state.

The President had chosen the fast-growing industrial centre of Skikda to show how much the industrial economy of Algeria had advanced since he came to power in 1965 by overthrowing President Ben Bell.

Within the last few days he had also presided over similar celebrations in other parts of Algeria showing advances in agriculture and international relations.

But it was industry that took first place on Monday when he laid the foundation-stone of Skikda's new power-station.

The power-station is due to begin operations in 1974. The President also opened the new natural gas pant in Skikda, but it was purely a ceremonial occasion, for the complicated process of liquifying the gas has already begun. He also took the opportunity of announcing large new finds of natural gas in the Sahara, and noted the recent discovery of uranium, tin and mercury deposits.

The celebrations ended with President Boumedienne's signing of the "Golden Visitors Book" and with the promise of still ore development for Skikda -- the planned building in the near future of a new plastics plant.
