Background: Soccer ... In Barcelona on Wednesday (26 March) England gave their European Championship hopes a boost by beating Spain 2-0 at Nou Camp Stadium. It was an impressive performance by England against a comparatively young and inexperienced Spanish side. The two teams are due to meet in the European Championship finals in Italy in June, and England Manager Ron Greenwood must have been well pleased with the performance of his team....
SYNOPSIS: England attacked from the kick-off, and after Kevin Keegan had gone close, his team-mate Tony Woodcock opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Woodcock fastened on the ball at the half-way line, raced clear and calmly slid the gall in the Spanish net.

It was a great start for England but after the interval, Spain had its chances.

But it was England who went further ahead in the 65th minute. This time Trevor Francis found the net.

Manchester United's Stevey Coppell clipped it over from the right, Francis brought it under control and scored with a neat, low right-foot drive.

The Spanish tried to hit back, but even this free-kick came to no avail. So the final score remained England two, Spain O.
