  • Description

TWO THOUSAND PORTUGUESE TROOPS WEARING JUNGLE COMBAT CLOTHING WERE GIVEN A ROUSING SEND-OFF WHEN THEY LEFT LISBON ON WEDNESDAY FOR ANGOLA. THEY WILL BE REPLACING OTHER UNITS WHICH HAVE SERVED FOR TWO YEARS IN WEST AFRICA.

THE UNDER-SECRETARY FOR THE ARMY WAS AT THE QUAYSIDE TO TAKE THE SALUTE AS THE TROOPS MARCHED PAST BEFORE EMBARKING ABOARD A LINER. HE SHOOK HANDS WITH A NUMBER OF OFFICERS, AND STOOD AT ATTENTION WHILE REGIMENTAL FLAGS LED THE TROOPS UP THE GANG-WAY.

PORTUGAL'S PRESIDENT, ADMIRAL THOMAZ, RETURNED TO LISBON ON THURSDAY AFTER SPENDING THREE WEEKS IN ANGOLA. THE PRESIDENT'S TOUR IS WIDELY REGARDED AS A SYMBOL OF THE STRENGTHENING OF TIES BETWEEN PORTUGAL AND HER OVERSEAS PROVINCES. A SPOKESMAN SAID THAT WHEREVER HE WENT THE PRESIDENT FOUND PROGRESS: HE EVEN VISITED TROOPS IN NORTHERN ANGOLA WHERE MILITARY OPERATIONS CONTINUE. "NOT A SINGLE INCIDENT" MARRED THE TOUR, ADDED THE SPOKESMAN.
