Background: In the Jean Becker Tennis Tournament in Paris on Tuesday (30 October) top seed Ilie Nastase of Rumania came close to defeat in his second round match against Pakistan's Haroon Rahim.
Nastase began erratically, and dropped the first set. But from then on, the match became a battle between the guile of the Rumanian and the superb volleying of Rahim.
Particularly in the third and deciding set of the match, the result could have gone either way. Nastase was 1 - 3 down before he could overcome the Pakistani's consistent power volleys and hold two match points. Again when he was down 6 - 7, Nastase came back to crack Rahim who gave two rare loose volleys. The final score was 4-6, 6-2, 9-7.
Nastase's victory puts him among the final 16 in the tournament.
