  • Description

Egypt has been holding talks this week with the ambassadors of African and West European countries in an effort to get their support against Israeli settlement being established in the occupied territories.

SYNOPSIS: On Monday (22nd August), the ambassadors of the nine European Common Market countries were present at the first of several meetings held at the office of the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ismail Fahmi. On Tuesday (23rd August) it was the turn of the African ambassadors. Although the Arab world has unanimously condemned the new Israeli settlements as creeping annexation, Mr. Fahmi is now trying to increase the pressure on Israel by lining up the support of the non-Arab countries. The Egyptian government said the plans to set up three more Jewish villages in the occupied West Bank, was a serious escalation and aggression against the Arabs' legitimate rights. Mr. Fahmi said the Israeli action revealed their true intensions of placing more obstructions in the path of a peaceful Middle East settlement.

Also in Cairo for consultations with Mr. Fahmi was the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Yassir Arafat. Mr. Arafat told reporters after his three hour meeting that he was pleased with President Carter's remarks on Israeli settlements in the West Bank. He said it was a positive attitude and hoped the American President would continue to take such stands. On September 17th Mr. Fahmi will go to Washington for further Middle East talks with US Secretary of State Vance.
