  • Description

Portugal's Air Force General, Carlos Galvao De Melo, has attacked a political consensus aimed at putting a neutral military man in the presidency.

General Galvao De Melo's call, made on Saturday (1 May), comes one week after an indecisive general election which cannot be completely resolved until a president is elected next month.

According to Reuter, the most likely candidate for the job is 40-year-old Army Chief of Staff, General Antonio Ramalho Eanes, the man who masterminded the suppression of last November's left wing military rebellion.

Once the new president takes control, he must then appoint the Premier of the first permanent government in Portugal since the April, 1974 coup which ended fifty years of right-wing dictatorship.

Elsewhere in Lisbon, a fresh reminder of the deteriorating political situation was provided when a car bomb exploded outside a Communist Party building. One person was killed and six others injured in the May Day attack.
