In France, the left-wing Paris newspaper Liberation has been sent a videotape claiming to show the kidnapped West German industrialist Hans-Martin Schleyer. In it, he pleads for the Bonn government to secure his release. This film taken from the videotape has been made available to Visnews:
SYNOPSIS: The videotape shows the emblem of Herr Schleyer's kidnappers, the West German Red Army Faction, a five-pointed star star crossed with a submachine gun and the initials RAF.
On it the man claimed to be Herr Schleyer is saying, in a voice heavy with fatigue, that he's been in the hands of his kidnappers for five weeks. He looks haggard, his eyes are sunken, and he appears to have a bruise on his left cheek.
Appealing for the government to agree to the kidnappers' demands, he says that he has worked for West Germany for years, but what has happened to him has made a mockery of it.
Herr Schleyer had been told by his captors that he'd be killed along with the 88 hostages held aboard a Lufthansa jet in Dubai unless their demands were met. A joint ultimatum from the hijackers and kidnappers called for the release of 11 Red Army terrorists held in West Germany and two Palestinians in Turkish jails, as well as payment of a 15 million U.S. Dollar ransom.
