    ON JANUARY 31, SEOUL'S MILITARY REVOLUTIONARY COURT SENTENCED TWO SOUTH KOREAN GENERALS TO LONG TERMS OF IMPRISONMENT FOR TRYING TO HALT THE COUP WHICH OVERTHREW DR JOHN CHANG'S GOVERNMENT LAST MAY.

    A FORMER CORPS COMMANDER, GENERAL UNN SOO KIM, WAS GAOLED FOR TEN YEARS. GENERAL KANG CHUNG, A FORMER CORPS COMMANDER, RECEIVED A 12-YEAR SENTENCE.

    IT WAS STATED THAT GENERAL KIM HAD PLACED A REGIMENT ON THE ALERT FOR POSSIBLE ACTION AGAINST REVOLUTIONARY FORCES AND HAD DETAINED THREE OFFICERS ON THE DAY OF THE COUP. GENERAL CHUNG WAS ACCUSED OF ORDERING TWO REGIMENTS TO SEOUL SUBURBS AND ORDERING SUBORDINATE OFFICERS TO PREPARE MAPS OF THE CITY PINPOINTING GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, FOREIGN MISSIONS AND REVOLUTIONARY FORCES.

    LATER THE COURT PASSED A TWO-YEAR SENTENCE ON COLONEL CHAN IL PAK, WHO WAS CHIEF SECRETARY TO FORMER PRESIDENT RHEE, FOR USING HIS INFLUENCE IN THE SALE OF GOVERNMENT MONOPOLY PRODUCTS TO A BUSINESS IN 1955.
