  • Description

Despite heavy fighting around the Khmer Republic capital, Phnom Penh, the country's sole remaining pacification programme is still operating, only 15 miles (9 kilometres) from the city.

The programme is being run by General Norodom Chantaraingsey, a cousin of the deposed Prince Norodom Sihanouk. The general is in command of security in the western zone of Phnom Penh, but still visits the pacification scheme regularly.

Under the scheme, new farming techniques are taught to the villagers, who send their children to a community school. The villagers have already been taught to raise pigs and cattle.

General Chantaraingsey hopes to build more facilities for the villagers in the pacification scheme and to eventually spread the programme further afield.
