    THE THIRD STAGE OF THE ROCKET WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY LAUNCH A EUROPEAN SATELLITE ON ORBIT AROUND THE EARTH WAS TEST FIRED IN A STATIC EXPERIMENT YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AT TRAUEN, NEAR MUNSTER IN WEST GERMANY. IT IS WEST GERMANY'S PART IN A JOINT ANGLO-EUROPEAN VENTURE IN SPACE EXPLORATION, KNOWN AS ELDO - EUROPEAN LAUNCHER DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION.

    BRITAIN HAS DEVELOPED THE FIRST STAGE OF THE 'EUROPA' LAUNCHER - USING A BLUE STREAK ROCKET - FRANCE IS DEVELOPING THE SECOND STAGE AND WEST GERMANY HAS DEVELOPED THE THIRD STAGE. THE JOINT BOOSTER, WHICH HAS COST GBP100-MILLION TO DEVELOP IS DUE TO SEND UP A SATELLITE FROM THE WOOMERA ROCKET RANGE IN AUSTRALIA IN 1968.

    THE THIRD STAGE HAS A TOTAL WEIGHT OF 3,625 KILOGRAMS (ABOUT 8000 LBS) AND CARRIES 2,830 KILOGRAMS OF FUEL (MORE THAN 6000 LBS). IT IS POWERED BY LIQUID FUEL.

    THE WEST GERMAN SECTION OF THE ELDO LAUNCHER HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY TWO AIRCRAFT COMPANIES IN CO-OPERATION WITH A SPACE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY.

    THE THREE STAGES OF THE LAUNCHER HAVE UNDERGONE VIBRATION TESTS IN BRITAIN. THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY IS EXPECTED TO BE TEST FIRED LATER THIS MONTH IN STATIC EXPERIMENTS IN BRITAIN.
