Background: Lome I of Togo reached the semi-finals of the African Clubs Soccer Cup when they beat ASEC of the Ivory Coast 3-1 in a tense match to complete a 3-2 victory on aggregate. ASEC had won the first leg in Abidjan 1-0 a fortnight before.

ASEC tried to slow the pace and play a possession on game to hold the 1-0 lead from the first leg but they won an unexpected bonus after just seven minutes. Lome must have committed too many players up field, for their central defence was almost non-existent as Ivory Coast centre-forward Bawa went through to chip a shot past the advancing goalkeeper.

ASEC stayed two goals up on aggregate until quarter of an hour before half-time when inside left Geraldo outjumped the ASEC defence to head down and inside the post for the equaliser.

The goal transformed the game. The excited Lome crowd got behind their side and within six minutes they had scored again another header from Geraldo.

The second half was a tight affair with the two sides level on aggregate. Lome had a goal disallowed for offside but with the end in sight ASEC could hold on no longer. One of their defenders handled in the area and Ametowzion converted the penalty for Lome to squeeze home on aggregate 3-2.

Deposed Nigerian leader Yakubu Gowon was among officials watching the match.
