  • Description

Chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, John McCone, visited the Dubna Joint Institute of Nuclear Research near Moscow, Oct 14. Mr. McCone is the first A.E.C. leader to visit the U.S.S.R. His visit follows that of Vice-President Nixon and Vice-Admiral Hyman Rickover, chief of the U.S. Navy's nuclear propulsion division.

Professor Dmitri Blokhintsev, Institute director, took Mr. McCone, and American scientists accompanying him, on a tour of the Institute and explained its work. Dubna is the Soviet Union's principal centre of nuclear research, where prominent scientists from Communist countries combine in joint research.

During his ten-day visit to the Soviet Union, Mr. McCone exchanged views on the peaceful uses of atomic energy with Professor Vassily Emelyanov, his Russian opposite number, who will visit the U.S. with advisers next month. The two atomic chiefs met last month in the U.S. during Premier Khruschev's visit.
