  • Description

More than 500 demonstrators led by militant Catholic and Buddhist priests marched on the South Vietnamese National Assembly in Saigon on Sunday (20 October).

Dissatisfaction with the Thieu Government and growing confidence in the Opposition have become an explosive combination in Vietnamese politics.

Part of Sunday's demonstrations were led by a militant Buddhist, Madame Ngo Ba Thanh, whose followers have long accused the Government of holding tens of thousand of political prisoners ... and of sabotaging the Paris peace agreement.

Her small group seems convinced that change can be brought in South Vietnam only violence. The other co-leaders of the demonstrations was Thich Plap Lan, Chairman of the Commission for the Release of Political Prisoners.

The demonstrators clashed with police in their attack on the National Assembly, at one stage setting fire to a police vehicle after they had overturned it
    Several injuries were reported.
