  • Description

The United States and Egypt have resumed diplomatic relations after a break of six years. The new move in the Middle East negotiations came after talks on Wednesday (November 7th) between the United States Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger and Egypt's President Anwar Sadat.

The resumption of diplomatic relations was announced in Cairo by a U.S. State Department spokesman, Mr. Robert McCloskey. Mr. McCloskey said the move had been clearly precipitated by the three hours of talks between President Sadat and Dr. Kissinger. Israel, he said, had been informed of the decision some hours before it was announced in Cairo and Washington. He said the Egyptian Government had named Mr. Ashraf Gorbal as the United States Ambassador. Mr. Herman N. Iles would go to Cairo for the United States.

Speaking at a press conference in Cairo, Mr. McCloskey announced the unexpected departure for Israel by the Assistant Secretary of State Mr. Joseph Sisco, and a member of the National Security staff, Mr. Harold Saunders. Mr. McCloskey predicted that the two men would join Dr. Kissinger's party in Jordan on Thursday (8 November).
