"Israel must withdraw from Arab territories. You are sure that in 1967 they captured the whole Sinai; they captured the .. ah .. part of Jordan. They captured most of the parts of the Golan Heights. The resolution was passed here that peacefully Israel must obey that order to withdraw from all Arab territories; and this was passed by the whole United Nations member states; they refused. What can the Arabs do no? On top of this there has been bombing every day. We don't want war; we don't want the destruction of Israel; but we want peace in the Middle East.

(AMIN): But if they do not want peace what can we do .. ah .. you do. If at all .. ah .. I wanted to hit you with a stick, your duty is to defend yourself. Therefore the Arabs are to defend themselves and also they are to gain their territories by all means; peaceful means or by fighting because the territory was taken from them by force of arms."

QUESTION: "In the case of journalists .. ah .. will come and write about Uganda .. and may be about you .. in the critical sense; couldn't there be the danger that they may face a fate similar to the fate of this British professor who lived in Kampalan?"

AMIN: "But this British officer told me that he was (indistinct)writing nonsense. it was not true at all. What he has written, be was forced to write this article against me by the British government and also he was working for the organisation .. the secret organisation .. in the United States of America. This is what he told me in his confidential letter and he disclosed to me a lot of points that the organisation is working for eliminating all (indistinct) of some brilliant strong leader like me. This is what he told me. But I think his case is finished. But if you are the journalist you must write finished. But if you are the journalist you must write the truth about the country, about the leader; but you must not write something which is not true."

Background: At a press conference in New York, the President of Uganda, Field Marshal Idi Amin, said the British teacher, Dennis Hills, was working for a secret United States government security force when he was arrested in Uganda.

President Amin was in New York after addressing the United Nations General Assembly.

The President said that Dennis Hills, whom he had sentenced to death for calling him village tyrant, had told him in a confidential letter that he had been forced to write comments about the Ugandan President.

President Amin said Hills had been forced by the British Government to write derogatory things about Uganda.

He also said that Hills had confessed to having worked for a secret U.S. organisation that wanted to eliminate "some brilliant, strong leader like me".

President Amin also called on Israel to withdraw from those areas of Arab countries occupied since the 1967 Middle East War.

The President said that the Arab countries had no choice but to go to war against Israel to "regain their land taken from them by the force of arms".

This film is serviced with part of President Amin's answers to questions at the press conference. The President speaks in English, a transcript of which appears below.
