    THE REVEREND RALPH ABERNATHY, THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER, HAD A MEETING YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WITH PRESIDENT NIXON DURING WHICH HE ASKED THE GOVERNMENT FOR MORE HELP FOR THE POOR. AFTER THE MEETING HE SPOKE TO NEWSMEN AND DESCRIBED THE MEETING AS MOST DISAPPOINTING AND FRUITLESS.

    THE REVEREND ABERNATHY, WHO SUCCEEDED DR MARTIN LUTHER KING AS PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, SAW MR NIXON AT THE HEAD OF A DELEGATION. ALSO AT THE MEETING WERE MEMBERS OF THE WHITE HOUSE URBAN AFFAIRS' COUNCIL.

    THE POOR PEOPLE'S CAMPAIGN FOR MORE HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT IS THEIR SECOND ATTEMPT TO INFLUENCE WASHINGTON CIRCLES. LAST YEAR THOUSANDS CONVERGED ON THE CAPITAL AND LIVED FOR WEEKS IN HUTS IN WHAT THEY CALLED RESURRECTION CITY. THIS YEAR THE CAMPAIGN IS LESS SPECTACULAR, CONSISTING OF A WEEK OF LOBBYING CONGRESSMEN AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

    DR. ABERNATHY SPOKE AFTERWARDS TO REPORTERS ABOUT HIS MEETING WITH PRESIDENT NIXON.
