  • Description

FRED STOLLE, RUNNER-UP AT THE WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS LAST YEAR, TODAY (SATURDAY) WON HIS FIRST MAJOR INTERNATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN HE BEAT COMPATRIOT TONY ROCHE IN THE FINAL SINGLES OF THE FRENCH LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE 26-YEAR-OLD STOLLE, WHO HAS FREQUENTLY BEEN RUNNER-UP IN OTHER OF THE WORLD'S LEADING TENNIS TOURNAMENTS, BEAT ROCHE THREE-SIX, SIX-NIL, SIX-TWO, SIX-THREE. ROCHE AGED TWENTY, HAD ELIMINATED ROY EMERSON, ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN, IN THE SEMI-FINALS.

FILM SHOWS FINAL STAGES OF STOLLE'S MATCH WITH ROCHE, INCLUDING WINNING PLAY.

STOLLE, WHO HAD STARTED LOOSELY, QUICKLY FOUND HIS TOUCH IN THE SECOND SET AND AFTER THAT NEVER LOOKED LIKE BEING BEATEN. IT WAS THE SIXTH TIME THAT STOLLE AND ROCHE HAD MET IN A CHAMPIONSHIP, AND IT WAS THE SIXTH VICTORY FOR STOLLE OVER THE YOUNGER AUSTRALIAN. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME ROCHE PAD PLAYED IN THE FINAL OF AN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT.

STOLLE RACED THROUGH THE SECOND SET WITH CRISP VOLLEYING. HE MADE FEW ERRORS AND KEPT ROCHE AWAY FROM THE NET WITH SOME CLASSIC BACKHAND PASSING SHOTS.
