Background: More than 300 Ban-the-Bomb demonstrators were arrested today (Saturday) after police prevented a mass entry into the big American Air Force base at Ruislip, just outside London.

The police, a thousand strong, were in position, almost shoulder to shoulder, around the base. Ruislip is the headquarters of the U.S. Third Air Force.

Foiled in their attempt to enter the base, the anti-nuclear demonstrators sat down in the roadway, stopping all traffic for some time. Extra police, standing by close to the base, went into action. They dragged and carried the demonstrators to the side of the road, while Air Force personnel watched from the tops of buildings inside the base.

Later a police spokesman said that 302 of the estimated 600 demonstrators -- many from the Committee of 100 -- had been arrested. They were later charged at special courts set up for the purpose. Most of the offenders, which included women and children, were fined, but some were gaoled for periods ranging from one month to six months.

The demonstrators had begun their day's march from Kenton, about four miles from the base. Yesterday (Friday), after gathering at Hyde Park in Central London, they had marched behind a giant white cross to Kenton, where a halt was called for the night.
