Background: The Brazil team was jeered off the pitch after their most likely world cup side were only able to beat a half-strength Bulgaria, 1-0, in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday (14 April).
Bulgaria, who have also qualified for the World Cup in West Germany in June, fielded another side to play Czechoslovakia, the same day. Their ten man defence still proved extremely difficult for even Brazil's talented forwards to pierce.
With just Grigorov upfield for Bulgaria it was 85 minutes before Brazil scored. Jairzinho prised open the Bulgarian defence with a clever dribble and sidefooted the ball home. Bulgaria failed to venture a real shot at goal and they usually passed sideways and backwards when in possession.
The 81,000 crowd in the Marcana stadium were as frustrated with thier own side as with the Bulgarians, and certainly on this showing Brazil will have trouble keeping their world championship title.
Cesar worked hard and left winger Edu--a reserve in earlier World Cups - ran well.
Mirandinha should have scored when a loose ball ran across an open goal but apart from Jairzinho's goal there was no flair in the Brazilian attacking play.
It was the third time running Brazil have failed to score more than a goal in their warm up matches for the World Cup.
