SYNOPSIS: The People's Revolutionary Movement Headquarters in Kinshasa was host to more than six hundred women recently.

They'd come from many parts of Zaire, neighbouring African states, and countries as far afield as North Korea, to pay tribute to International Women's Year. There, to support them, was Zaire's President, Mobutu Sese Seko, and his wife.

Greeting the president and Madame Mobutu was a ceremonial guard of honour and as colourful group of women dancers in traditional dress. Before official proceedings began, all participants observed a minute's silence in the memory of Mama Yemo, the President's mother.

President Mobutu moved on to meet the organisers and many of the foreign delegates attending the symposium. Scheduled to make the opening speech was Madame Lutay Kanza, who's permanent member of the Political Bureau. Her speech was to serve as a commendation for President Mobutu for the contribution Madame Lutay felt he'd made to restoring the rights of Zaire women. It also outlined the part now taken by women in the day to day running of the country.
