Background: The Rio Negro and Neuquen provinces of western Argentina were lashed by torrential rains last week, causing severe flooding in many places.

By Saturday (15 March) 27 people had been reported killed with another 50 missing. Over 8,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and the worst-him town, Cutral Co, was virtually under water.

Authorities in Cutral Co, in the centre of the Neuquen oil-producing region, said the area had received its normal annual rainfall in one 24-hour period.

The Argentine Government has declared the flood-stricken area a disaster zone and has authorised air-force 'planes to carry emergency medical supplies, tents, clothes and food to the rain-swept province.

Although communications at various points int he two provinces have been disrupted, repair work is already underlay. The army has installed temporary bridges on roads wrecked by flooding rivers.
