  • Description

THE GOVERNMENT OF LESOTHO TODAY (THURSDAY) ARRESTED THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION CONGRESS PARTY, MR NTSU MOKHEHLE, WHO SUPPORTS THE TINY KINGDOM'S MONARCH, KING MOSHOESHOE II.

LAST NIGHT POLICE ARRESTED EIGHT PRO-ROYALIST TRIBESMEN WHO ATTACKED A POLICE STATION ON TUESDAY IN THE NORTH-EAST OF THE COUNTRY. THE ARRESTS WERE MADE WHILE TALKS WERE IN PROGRESS OVER A DISPUTE BETWEEN THE KING AND HIS PRIME MINISTER, CHIEF LEABUA JONATHAN.

CHIEF JONATHAN AND THE 22 PRINCIPAL CHIEFS OF THE TINY SOUTHERN AFRICAN STATE -- FORMERLY THE BRITISH COLONY OF BASUTOLAND -- WERE EXPECTED TO RESUME THEIR TALKS TODAY WITH THE KING, WHO HAS BEEN HELD IN PROTECTIVE CUSTODY FOR OVER A WEEK.

THE PRIME MINISTER ALLEGES THAT THE KING HAS BEEN PLOTTING WITH MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITION PARTY TO "OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT BY FORCE."
THE KING IS BEING HELD IN HIS PALACE UNDER HEAVY GUARD. THIS FOLLOWED VIOLENT DISTURBANCES AT THE SCENE OF A CONGRESS PARTY RALLY IN WHICH EIGHT PEOPLE DIED.

THE RALLY WAS TO HAVE MARKED THE CLIMAX OF A CAMPAIGN IN WHICH KING MOSHOESHOE II, BACKED BY THE PAN-AFRICAN OPPOSITION PARTIES, WAS SEEKING MORE EXECUTIVE POWERS THAN GRANTED TO HIM IN THE CONSTITUTION THROUGH WHICH BRITAIN GAVE INDEPENDENCE TO THE FORMER PROTECTORATE OF BASUTOLAND THREE MONTHS AGO.
