  • Description

Police wearing steel helmets and armed with clubs took five hours to quell a riot of more than 1,000 people in the Puerto Rican section of Chicago on Sunday night (12 June).

The riot started shortly after a policeman shot a Puerto Rican youth who allegedly threatened the law enforcement officer.

Four police cars were set afire and another car was vandalised by members of the mob. Firemen attempting to extinguish the blazes were attached by rock and bottle-throwing youths. A local newspaper photographer was beaten by the mob. He had to be rushed to the hospital where he was treated and later released.

Molotov cocktails were thrown inside a neighbourhood school. Only light damage was done. Other explosives were thrown at stores, which were later looted.

Spanish-speaking policemen were called in to speak to the crowd over bullhorns. They pleaded with the rioters to drop their stones and bottles and return to their homes.

At least six people were hurt, and police arrested at least 40 people.

The rioting occurred during the observance of Puerto Rico week in Chicago.
