    Iceland today (6 September) rejected a protest by Britain over an incident between a Hull trawler and an Icelandic gunboat in what has come to be known as the "can war" involving the two countries.

    At least eight British trawlers have been fishing in waters about twenty-two miles (35 kms) from the Icelandic coast. This is at least ten mailed (16 kms) outside the 12-mile (19 kms) limit which Britain and other European countries recognise.

    They have been under constant and close watch by Icelandic gunboats patrolling inside the 50-mile (80 kms) limit claimed by Iceland.

A protest by Britain ever an incident between one of the trawlers and a gunboat has been rejected by the Icelandic Government. The incident areas when the gunboat cut one of the fishing vessel's trawl wires. Iceland claimed the vessel was flying no flag and refused to take any notice of warnings from the gunboat. The gunboats have been equipped with devices attached to paravanes to sever the nets.

    Cutting one of the trawl wires causes the net to become entangled under water. There is also the danger that the severed cable could whip back across the deck of the trawler, injuring crewmen.

    At lest eight British trawlers have been fishing in waters about twenty-two ten miles outside the twelve-mile limit which Britain and other European countries recognise.

    Iceland, however, has been insisting that the trawlers do not fish inside a fifty-mile restricted waster limit.
