  • Description

In India, the people of West Bengal have been recovering from the devastating floods of a little more than a month ago. But now, new monsoons have brought fresh misery, and the threat of death and disease to thousands more.

SYNOPSIS: Twice in little more than a month the people of West Bengal have been hit by monsoon floods. The village of GHUSKARA in the district of BURDWAN was still half underwater as the floods recede, with many houses badly damaged.

Refugees from the many devastated villages headed for the higher ground of the railway embankment, although much of this had been swept away, bringing down telegraph poles and cutting communication.

Playing a leading role in rescue work is the Army which has been working round the clock rescuing people from the rooftops of their homes and ferrying them to safety. The Government has appealed to private boat owners to make their craft available for rescue work.

The devastation is widespread with few dwellings remaining undamaged. The Government is faced with the task of rescuing thousands of people, and organising the distribution of medical supplies, food and clothing. It is a major effort to combat disease and death.

And in the HOWRAH District of West Bengal, the large town of ULUBARIA was inundated by floodwater with many of the population taking refuge on the roof of the hospital. The patients had to be moved to the upper stories of the building. But not all were lucky enough to find such refuge and could only plough through the water seeking safety elsewhere.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the stricken West Bengal districts can be found leaving their waterlogged homes with what belongings they have been able to salvage. But in some places the bus services still struggle on, picking up passengers waiting on flood swept highways.
