  • Description

South Vietnam Prime Minister, Air Vice-Marshall Nguyen Ky, who announced last weekend that he was entering the country's Presidential election contest, began his election programme with a tour of Binh Duong province, near Saigon.

During his tour, the Prime Minister opened a new refugee hamlet in Binh Duong, fifteen miles (24 Kms) from the South Vietnamese capital. The village is to re-house some 600 families evacuated from the so-called Iron Triangle, the scene of U.S. military operations against Viet Cong.

Marshal Ky had declared his intention of standing fro election as President of South Vietnam the previous day. When questioned about the election, Marshal Ky told reporters that if a Communist or neutralist was elected as President in September's elections, he would "fight him militarily."
However, the electoral law governing the elections bars from office those working "for Communist or neutralists."
In a speech at the refugee village, Marshall Ky said that it was essential for South Vietnam that its military leadership remained united. He said he had decide to stand for election in order to give continuity to the work done by the military regime in South Vietnam over the past two years.
