Background: Mr Robert Cook, the 29-year-old British art dealer, was filmed in Amsterdam, Aug 29, as she returned to his flat after helping the local police for several days with the investigation of a theft of four valuable paintings, including a Rubens, he reported stolen from his Amsterdam apartment, Aug 24.

After the theft - the property reported missing also included a typewriter and tape-recorder belonging to Mr Cook - the art dealer's passport was held by the police while Chief Inspector H. Postma checked over the details of the case. There was some doubt as to whether Mr Cook had followed the correct legal procedure when entering Holland with the paintings, in order to sell them in Amsterdam. An insurance claim put in by Mr Cook to a London firm amounts to over GBP50,000.

The following day, Aug 30, when Mr Cook was given back his passport, Chief Inspector Postma told reporters that the police had reason to believe the window in the flat had been smashed from inside. Also nobody in Holland, not even the landlord, had ever seen the property reported stolen. The police had no evidence warranting the detention of Mr Cook, who was returning to Britain the same evening. Mr postma said: "We shall continue with the investigation but we have no hope that it will go further."
