More than 1,000 people packed into a hall to hear the speakers, who included two Members of Parliament, Mr. Bhupesh Gupta and Mr. Sat Pal Kupur, and the General Secretary of the Indian Communist Party, Mr. Rajeshwara Rao.

The speakers praised the services of Sheikh Mujibur to the poor and the welfare of the people of Bangladesh.

The Sheikh was very popular throughout India and the Indians feel very deeply about events in Bangladesh, the nation they helped create.

So far, New Delhi has avoided offering formal recognition to the new government in Dacca under President Khondker Mushtaque Ahmed, Sheikh Mujib's former commerce minister and one of his closest colleagues.
