Background: The Basque Separatist Organisation - E.T.A. - has claimed responsibility for the murders of two Spanish policeman in San Sebastian on Monday (25 September).

SYNOPSIS: Police said the two policemen went to the Atocha fruit and vegetable market nearly every day to but stores for the local Guardia Civil Barracks. Three or four young men jumped out of a car and opened fire with sub-machine guns as the policemen, dressed in civilian clothes, were loading their purchases into a van.

The attackers fled in a commandeered taxi, when police cars, with sirens blaring, approached the scene. The taxi was found later abandoned, with blood stains inside, suggesting one of the gunmen may have been wounded. The policemen's Association - representing 85 percent of the armed police - has condemned the Government for not being tough enough against the new wave of guerrilla violence. The Government responded to the criticism by suspending six leading members of the Police Association. The latest deaths bring to seven the number of Spanish police killed in guerrilla attacks in a month. On Saturday (23 September), a police bomb disposal expert died in a booby trap explosion in Vitoria.
