  • Description

The sound of Scottish bagpipes replaced more traditional Indonesian music at a sports ground in Djakarta on Saturday (7 August).

SYNOPSIS: The Kuningan Students' Sports Stadium in Djakarta was the scene of a Scottish Highland Festival of Music, Dance and Sport. It's the second time that Djakarta has hosted the Highland Festival, the first was held last year. One of the competitions was for individual pipers.

Contestants at the festival included Indonesians, New Zealanders, Australians, residents of Holland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia -- and even some from Scotland. The games were not restricted to adults -- there were also children's dance competitions and athletics events.

Included in the athletics were traditional Scottish events such as the tug-of-war, the hammer throw and shot put. Track and jumping event also attracted competitors from as far away as Canada.

And since no Highland gathering would have been complete without the organisers included the most famous of traditional Scottish events--tossing the caber. There were two sections with 110 and 165 pound (50 and 75 kilograms) cabers -- and the event was won by a Scotsman.
