  • Description

Greek, Turkish and Cypriot Ambassadors made charges and counter charges about the fighting in Cyprus at the United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday (22 July).

Greek ambassador Panayotacos called the Turkish airforce's strafing of innocent civilians and hospitals "inhuman."
Turkish ambassador Olcay -- speaking in French -- criticised the United Nations forces in Cyprus for not being able to stop the massacre of Turkish Cypriot civilians by the Greek Cypriot National Guard; and Cypriot ambassador Rossides attacked both Greece and Turkey. He said Cyprus was the victim of two consecutive attacks upon its independence -- meaning the Greek led coup that put EOKA guerrilla Nikos Sampson in power and the Turkish invasion. Mr. Rossides bitterly attacked the Turkish airforce's use of napalm bombs.
