  • Description

BRITAIN'S SPECIAL ENVOY IN AFRICA, MR. MALCOLM MACDONALD, IS IN KHARTOUM FOR TALKS WITH THE SUDANESE GOVERNMENT ON THE POSSIBILITIES OF RESUMING ANGLO-SUDANESE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WERE BROKEN OFF BY THE SUDAN DURING LAST JUNE'S ARAB-ISRAELI WAR, WHEN THE ARABS ALLEGED THAT BRITAIN HAD SIDED WITH ISRAEL. BRITAIN STRONGLY DENIED THIS, AND THE ALLEGATION WAS LATER WITHDRAWN BY THE ARABS. MR. MACDONALD TALKED TO PRIME MINISTER MOHAMMAD MAHGOUB, AND OTHER MINISTERS.

THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, WHICH BROKE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN IN DECEMBER, 1965, OVER BRITAIN'S HANDLING OF THE RHODESIA SITUATION, RECENTLY DECIDED TO RE-ESTABLISH DIPLOMATIC TIES WITH BRITAIN.

AFTER THE TALKS, MR. MACDONALD MADE A COURTESY CALL ON THE EX-PRIME MINISTER OF THE SUDAN, SADIK EL-MAHDI. (WEARING WHITE TURBAN), AT SADIK'S HOUSE IN OMDURMAN.

SYNOPSIS: THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS' BUILDING IN KHARTOUM WAS THE SCENE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) FOR A MEETING ON FUTURE ANGLO-SUDANESE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS. THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE SUDAN, MR. MOHAMMED MAHGOUB GREETED BRITAIN'S SPECIAL ENVOY IN AFRICA, MR. MALCOLM MACDONALD. THE TWO MEN, AND OTHER SUDANESE MINISTERS, TALKED ON THE POSSIBILITIES OF RESUMING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN BRITAIN AND THE SUDAN. THESE WERE BROKEN OFF BY THE SUDAN DURING LAST JUNE'S ARAB-ISRAELI WAR, WHEN THE ARABS ALLEGED THAT BRITAIN HAD SIDED WITH ISRAEL. BRITAIN STRONGLY DENIED THE ALLEGATION, AND IT WAS LATER WITHDRAWN BY THE ARABS.

IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE TALKS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL, AND THAT DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WILL BE RESUMED BETWEEN THE COUNTRIES, PROBABLY BEFORE NEXT JANUARY. THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, WHICH SPOKE OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN IN DECEMBER, 1965, OVER THE RHODESIA SITUATION, RECENTLY DECIDED TO RESUME TIES.

THE TALKS ENDED AT LUNCHTIME, AND AFTER LUNCH MR. MACDONALD WAS DRIVEN INTO OMDURMAN. HE WENT TO SEE THE EX-PRIME MINISTER OF THE SUDAN, SADIK EL-MAHDI. MR. MACDONALD WAS GREETED BY THE MAHDI, AND THE TWO MEN HAD AN INFORMAL CHAT AT THE MAHDI'S HOUSE.
